The 1s that can't are the 1s they need to fill a 1 hour episode of the x-factor, if u had all good singers the ratings would go down,,same as if u were @ a kareoke night out, people like 2 see others fail. And also simon cowel would'nt be famous if every 1 was good.

I think some of them are deliberately awful because they want their 15 minutes and they know that if you can't be really really good then be really really awful - you'll get noticed either way. Its mediocrity that gets ignored.
Some I think aren't too bad but the nerves of singing unaccompanied in front of the panel on TV just gets to them and they mess it up. Singing gets really affected if you're tense and if you think you're going to go wrong you do.
Some just pick the wrong songs - they sing things that are too high for them or don't suit their voice. You think to yourself - "now if that was in a different key or you tried XXXX it wouldn't be so bad"
Some are just plain awful I know. I don't know why they think they can sing, presumably they managed to stagger through a couple of karaoke nights while pished and their equally pished mates told them they were good.
I'm not a terrible singer - I'm not professional quality, although I'd be really tempted to have a go just to see what the panel thought!!! I guess the only problem is exposing yourself to ridicule if it goes horribly wrong because the whole country will see it.

Because, it is all about entertainment value. Obviously some are mentally affected and honestly believe they can sing but others only do it as they know they will get on TV. It has been proved by the Cheeky Girls, they were pants, they knew they were pants, but people bought the records etc, and they made money! It's a guaranteed way to get on TV!

Most people that go on those kind of shows are attention seekers, the reason they are attention seekers is because they haven't got any real talent which is why no one fusses over them in the first place. Therefore they make alot of noise to show off. Its a long sad road for those losers!

Most are pretending they think they can sing and do it extra badly so that they get on the show, if you're an okay singer and acknowledge your faults, you're not going to make it to the show. Those people want to get on tv. If it wasn't on TV, 90% of those people wouldn't turn up.

they are only doing it because they want to be on tv and believe they can sing properly, when as you just said most of them can't. its also because they assume that they are going to be rich and famous, when the chances of that happening are one in a million. although if shows like x factor and pop idol are anything to go by, they just show how fickle the music industry has become by making stars out of nobodies who have just appeared on tv and giving them recording contracts. and what type of message is this sending out to potential musicians and artists who want to make it in the pop scene? whatever that is, it is certainly the wrong one that's for sure.

I suspect a big part of the reason is that it is very hard to hear your self the way others hear you. It works in reverse as well, there are many people who think they can't sing but have good voices.

Because, they have already been through some auditions before they see the judges, where they have been told that they can go through to the next stage. They think it is because they are good, when really they are put through for entertainment value.

A lot of them know they can't but just want the fame.Have you noticed how many of the singers use a blueprint which we've all heard before but they still get through just on looks?
