Van Halen - Van Halen
At least half of the songs on Van Halen's eponymous 1978 debut are still considered classics, and the Eddie Van Halen instrumental "Eruption" revolutionized the guitar community by introducing a technique called finger-tapping into the heavy metal lexicon. A magnificent debut for sure, but maybe the band should have held onto a few of their blockbuster tunes to bolster the lean years that started after 1984, and continue to the present day. Regardless, Van Halen amply demonstrate their drive, showmanship, and musicianship throughout, blowing the needle off the scale on such tracks as "You Really Got Me," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Runnin' with the Devil," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love."

Van Halen II
Is every bit the classic their debut was. David Lee Roth's talent really shows here. From what I hear this album was recorded in less than a week! You wouldn't know it, as the songs sound masterfully crafted. Not one second seems rushed.
Another fine cover tune opens the album, "You're no good" and gets things going in full throttle. "Dance the night away" with it's pleasant harmony reached the top 20. The feel-good chorus of "Bottoms up" never disappoints. Eddie showcases his acoustic chops on "Spanish fly" followed by the all-out rocker "Dead or alive". "Women in love" will lift you up during the dog days of summer. Capping it off is the classic "Beautiful girls" playful lyrics, strong chorus, what's not to like? The songs on Van Halen II encapsulate the ultimate Summertime feel. This is a must-have.

Then just get this for the hits from there other albums Van Hagar years as I called them included. Best of Van Halen, Volume 1

Running with the Devil or anything from the 1984 album back when Van Halen was the real deal.

Let's see, here are my personal favorites. First from the Roth Era: These albums would be Van Halen I and Fair Warning. Hagar Era: These would be 5150 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, these are just my faves and what I consider to be their strongest albums. VH II has it moments, but it has too many cover songs in my opinion.

anything from Van Halen II or before. Nothing from 1984, when they went pop and put those damn keyboards in their music.
