I just talked to a guy yesterday who was doing the house next door to my sister, and according to him it doesn't pay much at all and can be pretty dangerous, as he still has to do it in the winter, and he really has to look it over everywhere, roof, basement, and crawlspaces. He said it doesn't pay to have claustrophobia.
For one job this week he had to leave Anchorage and drive to the airport, fly to an island take a taxi, do the appraisal, but the guy told him he needed to come back because he was not ready, and that he had an item in the kitchen that needed fixing, tile I think he said. Well he went back home, and was now $100.00 poorer from the flight, then went back a few days later and the guy still was not done.
Well he told us if the couple buying the house were paying him it would have been okay, and he would have just finished anyway, but it was the slow guy who was paying ,so he had to wait on him some more. Another $100.00 down. When he was done with this little appraisal, which totaled about $40.00 for his upgrades, so he could add them to the appraisal from his bank.
When all was said and done, this guy was down by $260.00 dollars, so he told us it has it's good days where you can make fast cash and others where it doesn't pay to get out of bed.

No, not likely. On the same $250,000 loan, an appraiser might charge $300 for the appraisal, but the loan officer may be paid upwards of $1,500, depending on who they work for and what their pay structure is like.
