How big was this thing...was it a mana ray? I mean what are the chances of this happenening. It seems fishy to me. I never heard anyone dying from a stingray unless it was very venomous

Stingray barbs do carry venom- normal it's just extremely painful but it pierced his heart, which sent it circulating. And I think pulling it out probably did more damage than anything else.

Keep in mind that there are small jellyfish off the Australian coast whose sting is lethal to humans, and they are no larger than a dime.

The venom had nothing to do with it. The Barb was extraordinarily long (a very large stingray) and it pierced his heart. Just imagine being stabbed deeply in the chest with a jagged letter opener. It was quite a fluke.

There is no evidence to support this yet, but many believe he did the most damage to himself by pulling it out...remeber, it's barbed in one direction so pulling it out would have had a shredding effect.

Once the tape gets released, and I'm sure someone will leak it soon, we'll know more.

Hope this helps!

Its very very rare for someone to die of a stingray barb. occasionally it happens when someone is walking in shallow water, but the story with Steve is that he was coming at it from an above angle while the cameraman was in front, and it 'trapped' the stingray and made it feel threatened. The barb is coated with a venom and having it go right to the heart..there ws no chance he was gonna make it that far away from a hospital.

I recently read that it is rare for a fatality to occur from a sting ray sting. Although the stinger is venomous. Steve was riding upon the back of the ray when the ray became frightened and swung his tail which lodged the barb located on the tail thru his heart puncturing a hole in it. Steve was last seen pulling the barb out before he fell unconcious and died. The stories can be found on the yahoo home page.

He didn't die from venom....it was a freak accident. He was stabbed in the heart with the barb......when the stingray barb came out of his heart the jagged edges did unrepairable damage.... He was too far from any medical help to even have a chance.
Very sad accident. A huge loss to the animal world......he will be missed by many.
God Bless Steves family!

You're right. They rarely attack (according to news reports). It was less the venom and more the location. Unfortunately, the barb pierced his heart. Anywhere else and he may well still be with us.

I can't imagine what his family is going through. Bad enough he's gone, but to have to deal with so much media and so many people wanting to see the video of his death. Sad.

approx. 220lbs stingray, barb is about 8 inches long and serrated. Had he not pulled the thing out of his chest, he may have survived....but pulliong out a serrated barb tore open his heart, killing him.

Sad, sad way to go - but totally befitting the man,.....Im certain he would not have wanted to go out any other way...

They barb stuck him in the chest carrying the venem straight to his heart. They have it on tape, him pulling the barb out of his chest, but, that tape is currently in police custody as evidence.

It was an 8 inch barb and it pierced his heart. If he hadn't yanked it out maybe he could have been saved but its doubtful.
