"Why can't the fast food drive-thru get my orders right?"
I have to blame it on the "boss"! Taco Bell is one of the worst in my opinion, they almost always screw up orders, and I don't think they just started in business yesterday, so what gives, how come they can't get darn near perfect service? There are going to be errors, no problem, but 1 out of 2 visits?!?!?!?!?!?!?
If the managers kept tabs on who is screwing up, then they could get to the bottom of WHY and work on it, it's probably just a training thing, "REPEAT the order back and match it against your computer" might help! :)

Tell the person taking your order that there will be a tip if your order is correct and your food is fresh and hot. Of course you can only do that once at each fast food joint unless you actually tip the person giving you your order (after checking it). You will be amazed at what a fast-food employee will do for a $1 tip. Worried about the $1 tip, just deduct it from the wait staff tip at a sit-down restaurant the next time service is not what it should be. There you have the lower-income level plan for redistribution of wealth.

The employees working at the drive-thru windows generally are teenagers earning minimum wage. They could care less if the customer asked for a diet coke or a regular coke.

Probably a number of factors... The order-taker can't hear well because of the speaker outside, the order-taker isn't the brightest bulb in the box (no offense to brilliant fast-food workers, but there is a reason they're taking orders at the drive-through), the people who put your order together misunderstood or just grabbed the wrong thing...
Personally, I prefer to order inside the restaurant if given the choice between going in and getting drive-through. It seems to go faster, plus, if there's something wrong, you can correct it right away, instead of having to go through the drive-through line again or parking the car and going inside if you weren't planning on it.

It's nothing personal, they do it to me too... recently ordered a kids meal and cookies... got the fries and the cookies - no nuggets, no drink and no toy. Most recently I didn't ask for condiments at the order spot but when we got the order... the little snotty child asked me "didn't you ask for it when you placed your order?"... I retorted "Why bother, every time I do it's not in the bag anyways."
Doesn't matter if it's A&W, McDonalds, Wendy's, BK, etc.... I'd say a good 75% of the time there is SOMETHING wrong with the order, even if it's only no condiments (as requested) or napkins, or straws.
I'm thinking a two year college diploma course for fast food workers may be in order... lol

Because you get what you pay for. Here's why:
Workers are supposed to get each car out in 30 seconds or less. Which takes a lot of staff coordination--so you need ready food and well-trained workers.
But this costs money. Management wants to keep payroll low, so they schedule the fewest worker possible. They are also expected to keep waste to a minimum, so they don't make much food ahead of time.
So they try to meet the 30 second goal without proper staff or food prep. It's classic corporate approach. Your meal gets lost somewhere between "keeping expenses down" while "keeping standards high." Which is pretty bogus, because the food sucks.

I work at burger king and I think I understand what you mean. I think the reason for that would be that they either can't hear you very well over the speaker, or its just an accident. Working in the fast food industry, employees gotta work really fast and efficent, especially at the drive thrus. You work so fast you might not have the time to check it twice, especially in drive thrus. Its nothing personal.

I've had this happen too. Especially when I order a burger without cheese. I used to work for Rally's/Checkers Burgers. Sometimes the speaker equipment sucks or their on autopilot.

they are inexperienced or low skilled uneducated workers, that is part of how they can sell it cheap, if they hired more skilled workers, the prices would be much higher, if you want better service, you will have to go to better places
