You must have got a title from the dealer when you bought the car....if you have that, take that to the DMV. If you already took that to the DMV to get the title in your name, then they must have given you the receipt for the transaction, as well as the first registration number in your name. Take that to the DMV and they will use that to issue you a duplicate title after verifying where the original one went.

I hope you have some papers that will verify that you own the car. Receipts, canceled checks, etc.

There are ways to get a title, even on an abandoned car. If an abandoned car is found , one can claim it by advertising in the classified section of the newspaper with all the info, in search of the owner. I can't remember the time period, maybe 30 days, and then the finder can obtain a title to the abandoned car.
I had a friend do this, in Texas.

That may be a solution, even though you are the owner. Meaning that no one else can claim it, without proof of ownership.

Have you spoken to the DMV? Do you have any receipts?

Call your local BMV and file for a lost title. They can help you get it taken care of.
