There is a book, The Progress Paradox: How Life Gets Better While People Feel Worse. That kind of explains it.

I have thought about this when I consider Health Clubs. Back in the day, people went to work and came home having exercised enough that Health Clubs would have failed. Now people sit at work all day and Health Clubs are viable. By the way, Why do they have parking lots at Health Clubs? wouldn't it be better if people walked to them?

Many people when describing their childhood when they were poor, will usually add, but we didn't know we were poor. It kind of implies that they were happy with less progress.

We search for and crave progress as if it will make us happy, but how do we expect to be happy when we get there if we aren't happy on the trip?
