My son is 7 1/2 weeks old. I just changed his diaper and there was a green snotty thing there instead of his normal yellow/brown loose poop. It was just one glob. He's breastfed and up until that diaper, he has had "normal" poop. He seems to be acting normal, do you suppose he's sick? TIA for any ideas.

Occasional green mucousy poop is normal and OK. However if it continues to be a pattern, you need to consider the possibility that you are dealing with over-abundant milk supply, and foremilk imbalance.

Foremilk is the watery first milk that comes out of the breast at the beginning of a feeding. It is higher in lactose, and lower in fat. The hindmilk that comes out at the end of the feeding is high in fat and is thicker and richer. Your baby needs a balance of the watery stuff to quench thirst, and the fatty stuff to satisfy hunger and promote healthy growth and development.

I have dealt with foremilk imbalance and over-supply with all of my babies. It's not a terrible problem to have, but it's something to watch out for, since it does cause digestive trouble, and babies do need the fatty milk. The BEST advice I have for all nursing mothers is:
ALWAYS finish the FIRST breast first. Do not switch to the second side until the first one is completely soft and feels "empty." If the baby is full after nursing one side, that is fine.

If he goes back to normal poop, don't worry about it, it was just a fluke. But if he has green poop every day for a week, and it's mucousy without the little "seedy" things in it, try doing one side per feeding for a couple days and see if it helps (nurse on one breast, burp him, and continue on the same breast).

I was dismayed the first time I found foamy green poop in my baby's diaper. The poster above me has the best advice.

The only thing that cleared it up for us was emptying out one breast at a time for a while, meaning one side per feeding, switching off every other feeding.

Hmm, could be some excess mucous in his bowels that he got rid of, if there wasn't any blood and if it doesn't become a regular thing I wouldn't worry about it. He doesn't sound sick to me. If you feel concerned enough over it though, call his pediatrician. No harm in calling. Good luck! =)

For breastfed babies anything goes when it comes to poop. He's fine. It was probably something you ate that changed the consistancy of some of your milk.

My well-being care expert advised me that notwithstanding if it is amazingly eco-friendly extremely than yellow then it skill that it is passing by way of the equipment swifter... and that it is okay. Time to be concerned is that if it gets darkish... like brown or black reason that could desire to recommend it is taking too long to bypass by way of the equipment and accessible constipation... or different extreme issues.

A lot of interesting, strange things happen in the first weeks of life...keep your eye on it and his behavior and definitely run it by your pediatrician if it happens again.

That just mean he didn't poop for awhile. I did it once and it looked liked that.
