You can self teach yourself any instrument, to any degree of proficiency. Nonetheless, I recommend private lessons at some point in your life to learn some proper technique. I was a self taught drummer for about 7 years before I took lessons. I went from good to great in very little time. Any instrument has several tried and true techniques that were developed over many generations. Good techniques aid in economy of motion, increase speed and accuracy, and prevent fatigue.
Figure out what you like about the guitar, what you do and don't want to play, and study it by yourself for a while. There are numerous resources that rate books on all styles of playing, and you can learn a lot by yourself. But if you are going for an ambitious goal like jazz, prog rock, or shredder metal head, you're going to need to learn some theory and technique.

I have been a high school music and guitar for the past 5 years. I teach students who have self taught themselves often, but many times these students pick up bad habits and it becomes very hard for them to overcome these habits to play correctly. I would suggest getting lessons for 1-2 months and when you feel comfortable with yourself, then drop the lessons and play on your own. My classes were designed that the first semester you learned guitar and theory, and 2nd semester used your knowledge to learn to play what you wanted. Hope this helps.

I learned a little at a time. Some on my own and some by watching other people. I started about 30 years ago. You can judge for yourself how good I am by listening to this. I would love to hear your opinion.

That's what's called "natural talent".
How to do it? Pick up a guitar, your fingers will know how to do the rest.
