There are many excellent reasons for individuals to have a gun. Given the poor quality of police protection, All intelligent individuals should have a gun to protect themselves and their families. It is irresponsible and immoral not to have a gun.
Individual gun ownership is also crucial to maintain our rights and freedoms. The Old Soviet Union did truly believe that they could defeat the United States, and believed it up until the 1980s when they finally realized that they could not win the arms race. While the Soviet Union believed that they could conquer the U.S. they also knew that they could never hold the ground due to so many civilians in the U.S. having private guns.
The United States is one the few countries in world history that has never experienced a dictatorship. The reason is that with so many individuals having private guns, no one could ever take over the country without the consent of the governed.

Hunting is the best reason. IF you know what you are doing AND you live in an area where you need it (and I'm thinking "out in the woods" more than "bad neighborhood") they are also useful for protection.
Of course if you are of a certain mindset, you might consider good uses of a gun to be holding up liquor stores, keeping a victim subdued during a rape, murdering people you don't like, getting rid of competition at work, expressing your anger, things like that. I don't think that way but who knows, you might.
In the middle east it would seem that owning a gun is practically required as they seem to fire one into the air (a) to celebrate (b) to mourn (c) to do just about anything else.

Well for one because other people have them.
I will be more than happy to give up my guns IF you can guarantee that ALL other guns will be taken as well. This means the POLICE too.
I think self-defense is a good reason, the Constitution saying that I have a right to keep them is also another good reason. Well I know the liberal "elite" won't buy that.
The reason i have a gun is to keep the government from taking my gun.

Like anything else, a gun is tool and only useful or destructive depending upon who wields it. The best reason to own a gun is self defense. Though there are occasional abuses thousands of crimes are thwarted annually simply because the would-be victim showed that they were ready to resist by force of arms. For those of us out west, another good reason to own a gun is to hunt. I know a number of people for whom the winters would be harder if they did not have the meat from their own efforts.

Hunting, self-defense, and recreation are all good reasons to own a gun. Of course, all gun owners should learn and practice proper gun handling techniques so that they use their weapons safely. The National Rifle Association has the best firearms training programs.

Since hurricane Katrina last year, we heard how the government failed people. How the response was to slow. Tonight cbs evening news even ran a story about how amazing it was a person was picking up the pieces without waiting for government to hold her hand, I wanted to drive my head through the wall. Katrina was by far not the first hurricane, not the last natural disaster that has occurred. Shoot Mississippi was hit by this storm too, but when they just asked for help, not being propped up by the government the way the residents of New Orleans has.
Being a Christian, God expects us to be ready for what occurs in life. This can be seen with the virgins waiting for the Bride groom parable, God telling the disciples to sell their cloaks and buy a defensive weapon. Being prepared means that we should have an emergency kit prepared because there are times there is no way that the PD or fire dept. can help save your posterior. I have a plan for fire, burglary, break downs, and winter driving survival. (Until we get the global warming they promise there is always a threat of a three day blizzard during the winter). Being able to look out for our families is fundamental to what God requires if we look at our families as gifts. There is no reason that people don't have a basic understanding of first aid.
For those of you who think that the police will save you. When I called in that domestic I wrote about they put me on hold three times before I was able to relay the information. If the corradic artery is slashed a person can bleed out in thirty seconds. Los Angeles has a response time of 15 minutes, in this state response can be upwards of 30 minutes for a deputy to respond. Even worse than that The Supreme Court has said a in twenty different cases that the police are not required to protect you.
For those who think if they just give a bad guy what they want they will go away, that tookie williams everyone wanted to save last year was infamous for killing people after they had given the money to him, what if it's your life they want? I am convinced the reason that liberals are for gun control is because they have this notion that is based on karl marx that man is basically good. If this is the case then it is weapon that is evil. Thatis why they are so willing to forgive these heinous crimes with little or no punishment. That is the only way that kind of logic that makes sense, they believe the bad guy is a slave to his situation and must be pittied, not held accountable.
This country was founded on self-reliance, not dependency. If we allow ourselves to be dependent to the government we become government's property, something our forefathers, and troops have fought against since 1775. This is part of what makes this country superior to other nations.
So, if we are going to be good citizens what should we do? First come out with 'garbage hitting the fan plan.' If it involves firearms and you have never used them contact the NRA after you learn how IDPA shooting events are a good way to train for those bangs in the night, for first aid and CPR contact the Red Cross for training. Start a Bugout bag with the essentials (food, water, duct tape, cord, flashlight, batteries, hand crank radio, phone card.) thinking like Macgiver will help.
For security around home, I would get several security cameras and a few around the exterior bedroom doors for the bumps in the night so if you have kids and you have to retrieve them you know what your getting into. I would also get some motion sensors for all the windows in the house. If you are thinking firearms 12 gauge shotgun, but that stays in the bed room if you have to go out for the kids. That is what your pistol (nothing under 9 mm or .38) you need a good LED flashlight you carry and on your pistol (advise I've gathered from the show Shooting Gallery on the Outdoor Network and other self-defense places). Take a Keep It Simple Stupid self-defense class is always a good idea. Be aware of your surroundings and you may never have to draw.
Suffering is a part of life, but if you do these things it can be kept to a minimum. Relying on the government is foolish, they can't even prevent people from smuggling things on airlines, those that do follow the rules give up any defensive tools because the law states so, but those that would cause harm have a way of smuggling those products on and do it without fear. The government is for 'general welfare' as the constitution puts it, the police or fire can't be everywhere at once.
Also, in this state we have had mountain lion attacks. While we still have crime we are more apted to get attacked by animals than criminals because we all have been using firearms since we were eight years old.
Then there is hunting for food.

Good reasons to own a gun include collecting, recreational target shooting, competitive shooting, personal/family protection, and hunting. These activities are recognized as legitimate motivations to own firearms, by the Firearm Owner's Protection Act of 1986 (aka, McClure-Volkmer Act).
I respect gun ownership as a time honored tradition. I also acknowledge the fact that there are many out there that use their guns irresposibly, and others that use them illegally. I do not advocate either, nor does it not affect my reasons to own guns.

It's a collective right to own guns. I agree that they are bad but legal gun ownership is responsible for protecting many people, It's the illigal gun ownership that must be dealt with .

Read the preamble to the bill of rights.
When the government becomes corrupt to the point of totalitarian or dictatorship ruling, guns will be the only way to bring it back to freedom or to prevent it.
The bill of rights: Not because it's basic principles, But to protect us from the government. Think about this and realize who's telling you to give up your bill of rights to fight terrorism.
