Mushrooms, or any fungi for that matter, cannot make their own food. They have to live on dead organic matter that is in the ground. The source can be dead roots of trees but it can also be other dead plant or animal remains. Plowing under a crop in a field could be the source.

Sometimes there are specific fungi called fairy rings that grow in rings--that is just one of their characteristics.
