Wilt Chamberlain could jump nearly 60 inches from a standing position...

There's a picture of him in one of his books during his track and field days in college, and he's about 54 inches off the ground after a standing jump...he was coming down.

Lots of people have jumped 42 inches. Nate Robinson, currently on the Knicks, has a close to 50 inch vertical. Hell, Shawn Kemp in his prime had a 50 inch vertical. The record for the highest rim dunked on was 12 feet I think. Not sure about the actual highest vertical leap ever measured.

The world record holder is held by Michael Wilson of the Globetrotters, who has a 55" vertical leap. He once dunked on a 12-foot hoop, which is also a record.
