I'm 22 now, but I suffer severe social phobia, this has always kept me from following my dream- to become a musician. Now I am in therapy, but I don't know, most people start of young am I too old now? Should I forget my desires?(To play live, with other people, to go on tour, write and create music?)

Only ceratain instruments you need to start young like violin. But other than that, 22 is considered young to me. You still have chance .

Let me tell you this. I also had a phobia just like you. I am 31. When i got out of college I was 22 years old. I loved to play guitar but I only played in private. Then I decided that once I got back home from college after graduating I would post some band ads and really try to make it happen. Guess what? It was one of the best moves of my life. I met great folks (and some not so great who swore they were the best musicians ever!). But I actually made alot of friends out of the deal. I jammed with them for hours and partied afterwards. And I did it for about 8 years straight. I was in about three bands. I got over my social fears. It ended up that after a while when I would invite new members over to jam for the first time they said they were impressed that I was so outgoing. I tried to also be polite and open minded towards prospective band members that I met. Maybe every muscian that I met wasn't the best fit for my band but I sure enjoyed getting to meet and hang out with some of them. And a few actually showed me some new technique on guitar. I actually ended up knowing alot of people in the local music scene. My final answer is that it is never too late to decide to become a musician. Even if you don't make a million bucks, you still can have fun and improve your social skills in the meantime.

I started playing in working bands when I was in my mid 20s, and even in my 40s I was playing in a garage band with the same guys for 10 years. I am 52 now and I still play just for fun.
If you want to get around the social phobia thing, become a drummer....I was, and with all those drums and cymbals, people can hardly see you anyway.

No!! you are at the prime age to become a musician. Andy Summers of The Police was 36 years old before he had any real success in the music business, and the guys from Semisonic were well into their thirties when they hit it big.

Usually, you don't see someone over 18 pick up an instrument and learn to play it. I think it's beacuse most adults want instant gratification. They take time to learn. You have to be committed to it. You have to set aside time each day to learn. Don't become upset when you're not Jimi Hendrix after two weeks of playing.

22 is NOT too late, as long as you don't give up. Kinda goes well with the whole "don't give up on you dreams" thing, doesn't it?

22 years old... that's still young.. you can still pursue your dreams... it is not too late... but being in a band myself(and i'm only 17), it is really going to be bumpy at first... at least for me... one band to another... got kicked out, got used, treated as a second fiddle... I am now playing for my own, searching for a band to play with...
and it is never 'too old' to become a musician... and never 'too young; to be one either...
music has no age restriction... you love it, you do it... hate it, leave it...

p/s: my first gig. which was a year ago, was a disaster... i played bass for one band and drums for the other... and i got mixed up as to which songs i should play for which band... :P and now i'm considering to go for a classical music 'band' or group... but it is hard to find one...

So good luck, kie...take care...

you're technically still a baby. 22 is not old by any measure unless you're using MTV as your litmus paper. if you think you're too old then perhaps you are. other people here say differently. not something I'd normally recommend but in this case, follow the herds advice. either do it now, or you'll regret NOT doing forever.

You're never to old to be a musician. All you need is the desire and persistance to follow through.

Good luck!

No- look at Taylor Hicks from American Idol. Follow your dreams and it may even help speed up your therapy to have goals. Good luck to you.
