Believe it or not, in some places there is no law that says they must be red. California vehicle code states that each vehicle made after a certain year must have two working tail lights, and two working brake lights. They may be any color, but red is recommended. Check your local laws. Most just say they must be operational, many do not specify a color. Keep in mind that this may be difficult to prove to the officer who pulls you over, so if you find something, get a hard copy to keep with you!

And to be nit picky, bulls are color blind, the red cape is just traditional. The motion of the cape gets the bull's attention, not the color. And it's caution, not causion...

Wouldn't brake lights be awfully annoying and distracting at night if they were, say, green or orange? Besides the fact given by most other answers that red represents danger/stop and is visible for long distances, it also is very mild on the eyes, even when its brightness is quite intense.

Well lets see you know how a stop light has three colors and well red means stop kinna relate that to the brake lights.

because a red flash of light is more likey to attract your attention than a green one or a yellow one or even a regular light bulb. plus red has come to mean stop in traffic laws and whatnot so inherently when a person sees red they think, subconciously, stop and they hit their brakes.

RED MEANS STOP, Red for danger.. like traffic lights..
Also Red is used as it is the biggest contrast to white.. White at front to light your way, red at back to warn of stopping, so no confusion..

Due to I believe it is one of the basic colors our eye can pick up fast. That the other colors might blend into our areas and not stand out as much as red. IE yellow/ sun, and blue just is not as bright as red. Hope this helps.

So that you don't blind the person behind you with bright white lights. It's illegal to have a white light shining from the rear of the vehicle whilst you're travelling forward (So reversing lights don't count)

They are red because 1) red means Stop 2) they're brighter, so they are easily visible from longer distances.
