because the effects of drugs are potentially lethal at all times. Alcohol can kill you, but you'd have to drink an awful lot of it for that to happen.

If you read the congressional hearing transcripts from when they illegalized the first drug (Harrison Tax Act) you will find that originally cannabis was illegalized as a way to legally discriminate against blacks. Not only that but it was not within the federal government's powers to outright ban any substance at the time (according to the constitution it is up to the individual states), but they could place a tax on it and not provide any way of paying that tax. So therefore if your grew it or sold it you were guilty of tax evasion because there was no way to pay the tax.

Here is just one of the congressional quotes of reasons given. It is typical of most of the reasons.
"Marijuana makes (explicative N word) think they are as good as a white man and it makes them look at our women"

Now if you also do some research you will find that just a few years prior to this, congress passed a law requiring people to grow hemp which is the exact same plant. When it came to banning it the people in congress that knew what this plant was where very careful not to call it hemp but rather by it's spanish name "marijuana" so that they could get the support from congressmen that did not know that the two were one and the same.

The reason why some drugs are illegal is because the government have yet to find a method of levying a tax on same without appearing to condone the use of said drugs. More damage is caused by alcohol abuse than any other 'drug' but because it is a major source of revenue for the government it is unlikely ever to be banned - only controlled.

Did you know that there are some countries in this world were drug consumption e.g. marijuana, has been decriminalized. Please remember the Netherlands, and more recently in Portugal, it is not a crime anymore to consume drugs (although it stays a crime to deal). And in most countries in Europe people will not go to prison for their addiction to illegal drugs.

Some so called harmless drugs lead some most people to heavier drugs. A lot of drugs are addictive. After awhile all the person cares about is thier drug consumption. Heroin is a good example. Using these drugs and the addiction create many social and criminal problems. Most of us do not feel comfortable with the thought that our children would start to intoxicate themselves with crack, on the grounds of their civil right of freely pursuing their goals. So we prohibit it. But like any other law there is no final reason for any prohibition. Just as much as there is no final reason for liberalization, since we all have to cope with society.

alcohol and tobacco get in on the 'grandfather clause', ie they have been around and accepted for so long that it would be almost impossible to ban them (see what happened when the yanks tried prohibition)
Marijuana is a special case- because huge lobby groups wanted it banned, and it never had the popular support that went with beer 'n' f*gs. Also, the marijuana that is around these days is much, much stronger than that available, even a few years ago. No government is going to support a drug which is responsible for long term psychosis

Because the government sees it as their duty to protect people from "dangerous" things. I don't believe in this. Information about drugs should be freely available and distributed and all drugs should be legalized. By "protecting" people, they restrict freedom. And I think people should have the freedom to choose what they put in their body, bad or good.

Treatment of side effects and otherwise should not be free of course.

Alcohol has been proven to be good for you in small amounts while all other drugs are immediately or cumulatively dangerous. A line has to be drawn somewhere and criminalizing substances is one way of doing that. Tobacco is the exception to that argument but we've virtually criminalized that now anyway. You're not going to write 'y' for 'why' in your homework are you? Spelling matters!!

marijuana will be soon , manmade drugs are way to dangerous and addicting to make legal . people will say because of money but the taxes they would make would be more than they make now . alcohol being legal is a great question , it has killed millions and ruined many lives . if you are doing a school project compare marijuana , cocaine , tobacco , and alcohol as far as health issues and see which one should be legal

Alcohol, when abused, can have terrible health and social implications both on those who abuse it and those who get caught up in drunken brawls or unprovoked drunken attacks.

However, I think drugs are more dangerous - especially Class A - cocaine/heroin etc. It is more likely that you will harm yourself much more seriously - or kill yourself - with far less of the drug than alcohol.

Drugs are much more highly addictive than alcohol too.

AND, the government charge tax on alcohol too!

The last thing the world needs is "legalized" junkies. Illicit drugs are illegal for a reason -- they are bad, and cause health problems, financial problems and ruin families and lives.
