Many people thought of Steve Irwin as a loon. I myself can remember him surrounded by wild Komodo dragons, tucked in the fetal posistion, hoping they couldn't find him. Meanwhile he gave commentary on the whole thing.

I think his crazy antics of diving on top of Crocodiles, picking up some of the worlds most venomous snakes with his bare hands, as well as other things most people deem as crazy drew him a huge international audience. It may have made him a celebrity, but it also helped to accomplish his true goal of animal awareness and educating people on animals.

In the end he did teach us a valuable lesson. No matter how much of a professional you are, accidents happen. Animals can be very dangerous, and even the most skilled professionals take huge risks. Steve would warn us about those dangers in every episode.

I think this is a huge loss for his family, his fans, and the world in general. Nobody promoted animal awareness like Steve Irwin.

Police have been handed footage taken as Irwin, 44, filmed what was to be his last documentary. It shows him swimming above a stingray when it lashed out and speared him in the heart with its barbed tail, manager John Stainton told reporters.

"He pulled it out and the next minute he's gone," he said.

"The cameraman had to shut down. It's a very hard thing to watch because you're actually witnessing somebody die ... it's terrible," Stainton said.

Police said it appeared Irwin was just watching the ray.

"There is no evidence that Mr Irwin was intimidating or threatening the stingray," Queensland police spokesman Mike Keating told reporters.

Marine experts say stingrays can deliver horrific, agonizing injuries from the toxin-laden barbs, which can measure up to 20 cm (8 in) in length and cause injuries like a knife or bayonet.

so sad. :'(

*May he rest in peace*

I knew that he died, but I didn't think that he would die like that. I feel very bad. He was a pretty good Crocodile Hunter. Having a sting ray piercing your heart is a sadder death then just passing away. Though it still is sad that they die either way.

I was deeply saddened by this news when I first heard it. Steve Irwin was a man that brought many a smile to my face, while at the same time showing me, up close and personal, some of the most exotic wildlife out beautiful planet has to offer.

I find it doubley tragic that he has left behind his wife Terri and two wonderful children Bob and Bindi, my deepest sypathies to them for thier loss.

But Steve himself said that 'he could not have lived any other life', that 'wildlife was a magnet that always dragged him back, no matter what'. So while I, along with his family, his friends and many fans, will mourn his passing, I choose to celebrate his life, a life led living his dream and sharing it with the rest of us.

I wrote here yesterday but feel that Steve deserves all the praise I can give him. He was the most likeable guy and had such a wonderful, crazy personality. His love of animals and nature was admirable. He did so much to raise awareness and appreciation for them. I will miss Steve. My heart goes out to his wife and two children. I hope they will continue Steve's work. I also hope that (the manner of) Steve's death will not detract from all that Steve did to educate the public on wild animals. He always knew the danger and took the risks so that we could get closer to them without the danger. It is a tragedy that he died but I think he would accept that he died doing what he loved.

I think most people only knew him as The Croc Hunter from Animal Planet but Steve Irwin was actually the owner of the Australian Zoo, a great animal conservationist and what he did was to take his beliefs and love for animals to a new height. He used his showmanship to bring people, mostly children, to an appreciation of wildlife and the conservation thereof. He died doing what he loved best. And yes, it is sad for his wife and children. My condolences to them.

I would never have thought that he could just die like that. i saw his shows on kids central (channel for kids) and woah were some crocs fierce but he still handled them. i feel sad just to think how his departure would affect the people around him. his family-his wife lost a husband so soon and his child only had so little years of his love. and also those kids (dont know if any adults) who watched his shows? how to answer them when they cant see him with the crocs again? it's really a tragedy. but its heart-warming to know that he died for something that he had always wanted to do and put his best into.

I was schocked my children still watched his programs on the animal planet and they are teenagers. My daughter decided to become a zoologist because of his influence on her since she was a girl. I am saddened and pray his wife and children have a great support system surounding them. He was quite the charactor and I know my children and I will miss his educational entertainment. Rest in peace. lol
