like. i have to take this test where sight reading is one of the sections. and the examinor person gives your a short, random piece and you have to play it for him. so it's like. sight reading on the spot. and i always get a really low grade on sight reading which drags my overall grade down. so it's i can't really practice one particular piece over and over again. how i can i sight read better?

Sight-read as much music as possible. Try thrift stores, garage sales or swap meets to find inexpensive music. Your local library will also usually have some available. It's best if you can practice with some tunes you are familiar with, so you know where you're on and where you're not. That being said, the only way to get good at sight reading is to do it a lot.

Just like some people are faster reader then others, sight reading music is the same. Unfortunately there's not really a real trick to it, some people can pick it up faster, some people can't. However, what you can do is keep on practicing sight reading, just go through an entire music book and sight read through it. It's kinda fun and sometimes you find pieces you might wanna work on. If you are some of those people who can't sight read well, all you've gotta do is be patient with yourself, work out the notes on your own time. Unless you put yourself in a situation that you need to sight read, you can get by.

There are books out there specifically for sight reading. They will have short (like 32 bar or less) pieces ranging in difficulty. Give yourself 30 seconds to look at it and start. The important thing is to play it all the way through without stopping to correct yourself. Essentially you are practicing sight reading. This is the ONLY way to get better at it. You don't have to have one of these specific books, but it is good to pick easy music and just read through it without stopping to correct your mistakes. Do this every time you practice and your sight reading will improve.

Try this, get a hymnal, baptist, methodist, what ever... and start playing the hymns from the very first one.

Play it as many times as there are stanzas on that particular hymn.

Dont play them too fast, dont correct mistakes, dont loose the beat, dont look down. you have to force yourself to do all those things.

Im a piano teacher, this method has never failed with any of my students that had problems sight reading.

Read a lot of music without playing it, and try different speeds.
