The coca plant does have a number of legitimate uses (notably as an ingredient in Coca-Cola and other beverages), and it is legal to grow them for such purposes in some South American countries.

Coca is grown and consumed legally in some of the countries high in the Andes where it is an essential part of the Indian culture as the stimulant effect helps overcome the thin air. Cocaine is made by soaking the leaves in paraffin then precipitating the hydrochloride using hydrochloric acid. Cocaine Hydrochloride BP costs about £10 an ounce to produce, that's about 35p a gramme. However, the cost to society would be horrific and regular cocaine use not only burns the nostrils but causes severe psychotic reactions.

I've heard similar and I'm sure it is legal in Peru and other countries probably as well of course unless you r an athlete then they will ban u for doping anyway anywhere.......coke a cola doesn't even use the leaf any more as far as I understand..it's artificial like most sodas you could however check food network on that to be sure. drugs crops are sanctioned under the table by the USA in many foreign countries such as Afghanistan for one
It's all political and economic just chalk it up to hypocrisy if u like

I don't know of any country that made it legal, at one time amsterdam made drugs legal but I believe this has changed now. I also read a study once that said that 75% of all crime is connected with drugs and making them legal under government control would reduce crime by a huge amount also help control the spread of AIDS.
