I used it a couple of years ago. My friend had to move overseas, and couldn't take his cat with him. All I knew was that he had taken the cat to a shelter "uptown," and when I was able to find someone willing to adopt the cat, I had to try to find it! So that's when I called 311.
The operator was helpful, and connected me to a city shelter. Unfortunately the people there were less than helpful, saying that they couldn't release information about whether a particular cat had been brought in or adopted or put down. I'm just hoping that the cat found a good home.

I call all the time! I don't mind giving them my name, because I call when I don't have hot water. Always have waaaayyyyy too much heat, but let it get to 35 degrees, NO HOT WATER. This way they have a detailed record that I am beyond PO'd. And my landlord is NYC Housing Authority, go figure.
