The reproductive cycle of most trees is variable. Some years they will bear lots of cones (oaks-acorns, hickory-hickory nuts, etc..) and other years they will produce very few. There are many factors that cause this to happen. Unusual climate conditions are the main culprit. Late freezes and frosts, drought, or unusually hot weather can all stress the tree and cause to to produce less than normal. Many trees are just plain cyclical in their seed production and swing back and forth from years of high production to years of low production.

You might want to do a Yahoo search for "spruce trees" and read up on the subject as it pertains to your trees.

Good luck with your search for information.

When any pine produces an overabundance of cones it is usually a sign of stress - the tree is dying and trying to procreate its species before it fails.

that I can't tell you but just wanted to share that for the past 7 years I have had big bags of trashbags filled with mostly big pinecombs that I place deep inside my Christmas tree--I have gotten lots of compliments and it really adds to it!
