Henry VIII wanted to divorce his first wife Catherine of Aragon to marry Ann Bolyen but the Catholic church/Pope would not grant him a divorce. So he decided to create the Church of England which split off from the Roman Catholic church. This action included dissolution of the monasteries and taking land back from the roman churches and giving to the Church of England

Henry VIII broke from Rome over a disagreement with the Pope (primarily related to his divorces); as part of that break, he took over all Church properties in the kingdom. This meant that, once the Church was decriminalized, they had to essentially start over in Britain and has never reachieved their strength there.

So Henry VIII could divorce his wives instead of always having to trump up charges against them so he could have them executed.
