What online stock brokerages seem to be the best value? Can anyone relate stories with their personal brokers and how well/crummy they do their work?

Personally, I have had good experiences with Schwab, TD Ameritrade, and Muriel Siebert. But I don't use them for advice, I just use them to process my transactions and as a research tool.

You need to evaluate brokers based on your needs, your account size, and your trading activity. Most of the major personal finance and business magazines have annual broker scoreboards: Barrons, Money, Smartmoney, even Consumer Reports. Otherwise, you can visit the various company web sites. It's a personal decision and you need to do your homework.

Just remember that the stocks you buy won't necessarily be at the price listed on the ticker. A stock broker can pay a lot more for a stock. So even with a small transaction charge, they can still stick it to you with stocks they paid 20% or higher on than the ticker amount.

TD Waterhouse, Brown & Co., Fidelity Investments, Ameritrade and Schwab & Co and Sharebuilder.

To whom this may concern : Regarding the best value, this depends on how much you are willing to pay for hand - holding regarding research and products. All these investment companies are reputable . The only difference is how much research you need to make wise investments. I have dealings with Fidelity Investments , Sharebuilder and Schwab & Co. and I have not had a bad situation with either of these companies.
