i am hearing this weird noise and it only happens when you first start your car after it has been sitting there for a while. you push on the gas and it makes this weird grinding noise which to me sounds like someone scraping a piece of metal on the concrete and after about 5 minutes it goes away. It also seems like the slower you go the more obvious the noise it. any ideas on what it could be and maybe an estimate of how much to fix it?

We had a '93 Grand Prix with a similar sounding problem. On ours there was an aluminum shield/cover of some sort under the car that would get bent (never could figure out how or why), but my husband would have to climb under it every so often and bend that piece back in shape and the noise would stop until it got bent again. Only thing we could ever figure out was maybe debris flying up from the road would do it. Ours would make the noise the worst when you put it in reverse. I think he said that whatever it was would rattle against the the muffler. So you might have someone try looking at that.

Sounds like belt slippage, The belt tensioner on that car is spring loaded and with age they become weak. When you first start the car there is considerable load from the alternator which will make the belt scream.Have someone in the know check the tensioner.

Sounds like the starter not disengaging quick enough. Drive to the local auto electrical shop and have them check it out.

certainly rule out the starter, otherwise you would not be able to start the vehile. Could be the flexplate, they do have a tendency to crack. your best bet is to take it into a service shop that you can rely on to give an honest answer to this problem.

Hun if you are having chest pains do you ask your neighbor if you should call 911?? Same situation, call your mechanic. Anomalous noises mean damage occurring now.

it sounds to me like your flywheel is loose or damaged. this is about the only thing it could be if your car is not moving when it makes that noise.if it makes the noise when driving then check your brake calipers. they could be sticking but id say its your flywheel without looking

sounds like one of the bearings or brushes in the alternator are worn and making this noise.

Please don't tell me you're driving like that!! You may be doing more damage to it If it's a four cylinder engine, it could be your belt tensioner or the timing belt tensioner. Ifthat's the case unless you know some one who's real handy it could cost more than the car it worth. luck!!!!!!!!!
