I recently had 2 credit card transactions not go through on my Wachovia account, but the transactions were tried almost 5 times each. At $35 a transaction, my account is now overdraft by hundreds of dollars. I'm going to Wachovia today to talk to them about this, and if they wont take any off (which i guarantee they wont) I'm just going to tell them to close my account and I'll gradually pay them back.

At the same time, I'm in desperate need of a bank acount, and have heard lots of good things about Washington Mutual, but I'm not sure if I can open an account there if I owe so much money to Wachovia. Any advice?

Nope, you cannot have a bank account with Washington Mutual until the balance at the bank you owe money to is paid in full.. If you try to go to Washington Mutual or another bank they probably will NOT start a new account for you. Because your name and info are probably in the Chex System. Also, you may have to wait a while before you can have another bank account any where.

Go to Wachovia and pay the amount in full and make sure your name is cleared of any wrong doing. Then you might be able to start a new account there or some where else right away, or you still may have to wait a bit.

Are you talking about a credit card or a debit card?

If you like WaMu, go ahead and try to open an account. The worst thing that can happen is that they tell you No.
