I would say definitely get the pet insurance. I have 2 Siberian Huskies that I have pet insurance for. So far, between the two dogs, it has saved me $1,500. (To the person that said pet insurance was dumb, do you think saving $1,500 is dumb?!) I have my pet insurance through PetSmart (most PetSmarts have a vet clinic and an animal hospital inside their store) and it costs $40 a month for both dogs. Do some checking around and compare prices. One of my dogs was recently attacked by another dog and received a one and one half inch laceration to her left side, which required 8 staples to close. That visit to the vet cost me $200, but would have cost me $450 without the insurance. Someone posted an answer to this question suggesting to forget the insurance and take the money that you would pay in premiums and set that money aside in case you do have a big vet bill. I would advise against this unless you are extremely disciplined where money is concerned. You may end up using that money for something else, or using it for some other emergency that comes up that is unrelated to your pet. I think it's better to just pay the premiums and have the peace of mind knowing that should something happen to your pet, you will be able to take care of it. It's called being a responsible pet owner.

Hi Muddy. I have two cats and they are insured with PetPlan. I have had no problems with any claims at all. Many vets recommend them.
I have heard that Tesco's pet insurance is good - but only in magazines (not through personal knowledge).
I would never be without pet insurance. One of my cats developed a problem (ok now) - but it meant that the vet could recommend all the best treatments as insurance could cover it.

It's definitely worth having. We have Pet Protect insurance but I've heard that Tesco's is good. The thing is even if you need to make loads of claims like I have with my dog because of a constant skin condition and even though that puts your premiums up ask youself how you would feel if your dog needed a £1000 operation and you had to say no? You need to get your dog covered as soon as poss too because no company will touch him if he's diagnosed with a problem first.

Our dog is covered by Pets Best and we are *very* happy with our coverage and with the company. While saving for a rainy day sounds good in theory, the trouble comes when you've only saved $100 and the rain starts pouring (accident, cancer, etc.). Vet bills can run in the thousands.
When you're researching companies, be sure to type in "review" and "pet insurance" along with the company name. I found it very enlightening. Good luck!!

if i were you i would take one out now while the dog is still young, as the premium wont be as high now as when it's older. you may never need it, but vet bills can be extortionate if your pet is in an accident or gets a terminal illness, and its more expensive to get a new insurance policy for your pet as it gets older so i would say get it out now

I don't think it's worth it. There are so many exlusions, and of course the deductible. If your vet lets you, put money aside as a credit with them, and the money will be there if you need it, and you can get it back if you don't. Or, just put the 30.00 a month into a separate bank account for the dog.

Do it for a couple of years but also save a little each month for the excess, then re evaluate the situation, You may find putting money aside a better way to go

Yes, and I'd recommend Pet Plan too - they paid out £1700 with no hassle when my dog was injured and needed lots of treatment.

I have my horses insured after we ended up losing our horse but still had a £4000 bill. Now the dogs are insured too. Its a wise decision.
