From people i've never heard of with names like Gebhard Hertzog and Emilian Catalano. subject titles like 'PHehARMACY' or 'PHinARMACY'. I dont dare open them in case they've got viruses.

I've heard though that you can't get a virus through an email only an attachment?

But then what is the purpose of these-they aren't selling anything, they're just jibberish!

sorry if that wasn't clear-I mean I think you can't get a virus through the email, it's only if you open up an attachment you can get one-is that correct?

lilly-Yes,I saw your thread.
I opened one of them a few days ago without thinking. As far as I can recall the contents were just meaningless jibberish. What reason anyone would have for sending such things is what worrys me.

You can also get infected by e-mails without attachments. E-mails can contain dangerous scripts that can execute certain code on your system and make it vulnerable to malicious attacks. These e-mails normally lure the viewer to a web-site with links in the e-mail to install malicious software (spyware) on your PC. This spyware programs not only spy on you but generate revenue for the creators of these e-mails. The best is just to delete these e-mails and forget about them, it won't do you any good to read these e-mails.

I just read an article in Computerworld ("Tips for avoiding viruses & spyware"), which said not to bother w/the bulk folder AT ALL! As someone said, if you're using your spam filter correctly, almost all of the bulk mail is suspect or useless.

Once in a great while, you might get an e-mail from someone you contacted, yet the filter sees it as SPAM. This is especially true of sites like Ebay. So, check the folder for any messages you were expecting and didn't get. Other than that, I'd do what another person said: "Delete the lot".

Actually, you definately CAN get viruses through email attachments. Never open attachements in an email from a sender you don't know or recognize! Also, you can get viruses through scripts and such embedded in an email without opening an attachement, so just don't open email you can not confirm.

Also, Do NOT reply to spam / bulk email or bother trying to use an Unsubscribe link. Either typically just confirms to the sender that they have reached a valid / active email account and thus they know where to continue to send their junk mail. Also, they could then sell your email address to other spammers.

I think you're correct, you get virusus from the attachment, not the message. But, if you open the email, they can tell that you have a valid email address and tomorrow, there will be 50 messages where today you only have 3 or 4.

Delete every message that you did not ask for or that you don't recognise the sender. If you think it is from that guy you met last night but are not sure _DO NOT OPEN _ DELETE IT. Note the Caps here. If you are not positive about everything about the message - delet it. Do Not Open. This is the #1 reason everyone has problems with their computers and they crash. You invite disaster by opening anything you are not positive about.

just use the delete all in your bulk folder that way you do not click on any of them so any virus should not get activated it is not recomended to click on these messages as that is enough to start a virus keylogger etc running, the virus could be on a picture on the message etc

Simple. Since yahoo's bulk folder is really useless you should deactivate it and those dodgy e-mails will go straight to the trash folder.

I get loads of those too but if they are in your bulk folder, your spam filter is doing its job. Suggest you change your setting so that e-mails in your spam folder are deleted as quickly as possible.
