"Liberal" is in the eye of the beholder. For Conservatives, it includes centrists. Or anybody whose unmarried daughter has got pregnant; who has had horrendous and unpayable and uninsured medical bills and has had to file bankruptcy; anybody who doesn't own a gun; anybody who doesn't think that singing patriotic songs and saying patriotic slogans and prayers equates to being patriotic and devout.

It's slightly slanted that way as a backlash to compete with FOX's rampant (and admittedly) conservative agenda. CNN is a global news network that serves the world, so they are held to a higher standard by the world and other countries. They also have a larger international correspondence to give them a broader scope of issues and on issues. Also the media (largely including CNN) as a whole is seen as more liberal lately with the election and presidency of Barack Obama. They are seen and accused as pandering to Obama and taking it easy on him. He, unlike the previous administration, has a conversation with the media and engages them. So, naturally, they like him. They ask questions for a story and he cooperates with thoughtful answers. The media was seen as critical of the Bush administration (with the exception of Fox) because he wouldn't answer questions directly, intelligently or even at all. I would say a wise person would sample all 3 and make their judgments. Getting it directly from the source like CSPAN is a good way to go. All news agencies are going to put a bias on it, mostly not as blatant as Fox (who send out daily emails regarding directions to how to cover certain stories(1)). You also might read abroad as well to see how other countries cover stories about the US. I personally really think The Economist (a UK magazine) has great editorial pieces that can show you the issue and possible outcomes without a heavy handed bias that most of our US news seems to have. Read a few articles and you will feel smarter than most Fox and CNN anchors... and definitely smarter than that kid in your class.

regarding the Media Research Center In: This is a conservative media watchdog group run by president and founder Brent Bozell. (In June 1998, Mr. Bozell launched the Conservative Communications Center (C3) to provide the conservative movement with the marketing and public relations tools necessary to deliver its message into the 21st century.)

The Center has a $6 million annual budget and 60 staff members and is **funded by larger right-wing foundations (see below)**.

So, you're saying (the previous responder not the asker) is that because a conservative "watch group" tells you that CNN is liberal, it must therefore be liberal. Such circular logic is exactly the reason so many people believe that there is a liberal bias in the media.

During the first Gulf War, many people referred to CNN as "Ted Turner's Net Work of Lies" because it was so flagrantly biased. Now that we have Faux News, well I guess CNN looks leftist.

A really good book on this topic is Eric Alterman's "What Liberal Media?" I suggest it for anyone who wants to know the truth, or needs a solid argument for bar room discussions or forums like this one!

"Most of the criticism (and anger) has so far emanated from the political Right, which has offered us the rather unconvincing argument that a systematic Left bias is destroying the quality of news and debate in our country today. Journalist and historian Eric Alterman begs to differ."

Every news network has their bias. That is the reason I watch various networks. I find the common denominator of all networks is sensationalism, and it's not going to make the news unless it's sensationalistic.

What makes you think that the board of directors has anything to do with the editorial content or the slanting of the news? That's not a rational connection.

If you want a rational, objective view of how the news is biased, then go look at the Media Research Center, if you have an open mind.

Don't let cold, hard facts get in the way of a good neo-con fairy tale about how the entire media outside of Faux news is against them.
