Yes, a few times.

I ran out of gas near El Paso, driving across the country with two college girls. (I was their age at the time!)

More recently, I had the heater control valve burst on my car, spilling all the coolant onto the highway. The car had to be towed home.

I also once had a wheel bearing completely fail and the car had to be towed. Finally, I had a timing belt break and strand the car. Fortunately, it didn't do engine damage.

Oh yes. Once I was driving and the engine just cut off. No weird noises, no warning light. Luckily I was in the right lane and was able to turn the wheel and glide into the curb lane. I couldn't figure out what happened. I got out and started to walk a mile to the next exit. A highway patrol officer pulled up to me as I was walking and gave me a ride. Turned out to be my alternator. I didn't know anything was wrong with it and that it could just die like that.

YES, TWICE. I HAD MY ALTERNATOR FALL APART THE FIRST TIME AND USED WIRE TO HOLD TOGETHER'TIL I COULD GET NEW HOUSING BOLTS. THE SECOND TIME, IT BROKE DOWN, THE IGNITION MODULE WENT BAD IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER( IN THE CHICAGO AREA). I HAD TO WALK TO AUTOPARTS STORE AND THEN INSTALL ON HIGHWAY WHILE CARS WIZZED BY.

yep quite a few times, wheel bearings, ignition control module, fan belts, alternator dying on me, name it I think I've probably had it happen to me ... even had one car through a rod through the block, and old clunker, that didn't have an oil pressure switch or light that worked and my oil pump quit on me and the engine siezed.
