It encouraged more immigration, which incidentally is not always a bad thing.
Additionally, I think that it gave more people a chance to make something of their lives. When people have the initiative to work for themselves, and the opportunities they need, the economy will benefit. So many poor Europeans and others came to the US during the 1800s in hopes of making something better of their lives, and in return they contributed much both to our economy and culture.
