I worked with a guy once that had an actual medical condition in which his body would give off this putrid odor. It smelled of strong BO three times squared- perhaps your co-worker has this condition. Don't remember what it's called- sorry. If that's not the case- then just have everyone in the office start dropping subtle hints. It can't only affect you!
Have a great day!!!

Whilst your colleque is away from the desk leave a pamphlett on BO on their desk, these are available from doctors etc... or print info out from a medical website (they should understand), its annonamous and less embarrassing for them than being told they stink by a colleque.
Some people harbour breeds of bacteria that small worse than others, its often not there fault, a strict hygiene regime is required to overcome it, and if it is that bad medical advice should be saught from a doctor on how best to deal with it - am sure many websites give advice on the subject.

Confront the person and tell them why it bothers you and that you dont mean to be offensive but the smell really bothers you and that you would be willing to help in any way you can.
Maybe the person doesnt realize it, they could even have a hormonal problem, poor hygiene, or just doesnt have the cash for it (dont know how much they make)...try to be gentle...but upfront. Think of the way you would want someone to confront you with the same problem and just be sweet and to the point.

Tell your boss to make a general announcement regarding hygiene. He / she should get the hint. If it persists ten notify your boss and have him or her confront the person. The boss should do it discreetly and never reveal your identity as the complainer.
It is your right to work in a odor free environment and you should have supervisory support in this area.
I had the same problem with a perfume freak - they made an announcement and the perfume odors lessened and no one was the wiser as to who notified or if it wasn't several people notifying.

I don't have this problem with co-workers, but I do with some of the public we serve. This is a touchy issue; the last thing your company needs is a discrimination complaint. I have tried leaving bookmarkers around with personal hygiene tips on them. You can find a good template at http://www.whatshouldido.com/pershyg.shtml
Just copy the text and reduce it to the font size you need. Don't forget to credit the website authors for the time and effort they put into these hints. Good luck.

questioning someones hygiene is a tough one, but if you like this person, (as a friend) pull them aside and say something like, bill its with the most respect and best intentions im saying this, have you ever considered the deoderant your useing might not be effective, and might consider something a little stronger? my point here is to be diplomatic put this person on a pedistool makethem feel welcomethen state your buissiness, be sure you two are alone, when you bring it up, if you dont like them then go out and buy a good can of deoderant and walk up and say you might want to try this,,,

Leave a can of deodorant AND a body spray like Impulse (if it's a woman). Double the message. Do it anonymously though, and make sure he/she receives the 'present' when no-one else is about to save him/her from further embarrassment.

I would leave some deodorant or something of that nature on their desk before they come to work. Maybe potpourri or something wont seem as "to the point", but they might not realize they stink either.
