I'm a lifelong Florida Gator fan, so I'm hoping the season is huge. But realistically, the schedule is a killer, so my outlook is guardedly optimistic. Here's how I see things playing out in 2006:

Offense: Chris Leak is a senior, and he's had a full season of Urban Meyer's system. You'd expect that would translate into a successful year, but that may not be the case. Leak is still reluctant to pull the ball down and run, which allows defenses to put a single defender on him and then key the rest of the front seven on the running back. For Leak to thrive this year, Meyer will have to disguise his plays much better than he did against Southern Miss. To be sure, the talent is there for the Gators to score a lot of points. There are stables of receivers and running backs, and the offensive line is strong and fairly experienced. One of the real finds, and perhaps a key to some big wins, will be the involvement of true freshman WR Percy Harvin, who some see as the Gators' version of Reggie Bush in a year or two. The real key will be Leak and his ability to make defenses think twice.

Defense: Last year it became clear that Meyer didn't just care about offense. The Gators are incredibly talented in the front seven -- particularly at linebacker, where Earl Everett and Brandon Siler eat opposing offenses -- and they have a lot of talent in the secondary. Discipline will be vital, and that is a Meyer strength. If the defense plays up to its potential, Florida may not have to score a lot of points to win. Certainly, there can be lapses, such as last season's total collapse against Alabama. But short of that, the Gators' defense should be able to keep them in every game.

Schedule: This is the killer. After this week's game against Central Florida, a gauntlet starts that has Florida facing five Top 25 opponents in the next seven weeks. Next week is Tennessee, followed by a laugher against Kentucky. Then comes Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and off-week and Georgia. Florida's fate will be cast by its play in those five big games. Watch for Meyer's commitment to Leak as his starter should the Gators struggle offensively against the stout SEC defenses. Freshman phenom Tim Tebow was stellar in the Spring game, even discounting the fact that he was playing with a ton of offensive starters. His ability to stretch a defense makes him invaluable in a spread-option offense. If Leak gets banged up, or if the senior has problems moving the ball, watch for Tebow to get a lot more playing time, and perhaps even the starting job.

Outlook: Florida should beat Alabama, LSU and Georgia. Tennessee and Auburn are big concerns, as is the season-ending date at Florida State. Overall, I see Florida going 10-2 and winning or tying for the SEC East crown. That will put them in contention for a BCS bid -- either as the SEC Championship Game winner or as the second-best team in the league. At the worst, I see them playing the Big Ten's second-best in the Capital One Bowl.

His biggest problem this year is that the new rules that the NCAA mandated this season hurt schools that the kind of offense that he runs.

Teams are getting something like 10-15 less offensive plays to work with now that the clock is to be started immediatly following change of possestions.

Personally I don't think Meyer has the talent to effectivly run his style of offense. And the new clock rules are only going to hurt his offense that much more.

I hope they are good, at least in the top ten. If they can beat miami and florida state, that is good. I got them first in the SEC
