I've been washing our clothes in the bathtub since June, but it's too painful of a strain on my back (2 herniated discs) and knees. I was wondering if there was an easier way to do it. I don't have enough money to go to a laundromat (30$ a week), and I don't have a washboard or anything to wring the clothes out. Is there something else that will cut the washing time in half, but still get the clothes clean?

I live in an apartment, with no washer & dryer hookup. Everyone around here uses the laundromat, but I'm not working, only my husband is and his money just covers enough for our important bills. I probably wouldn't have credit anyways, as we just joined a debt consolidation program. I've tried the sink, but it's small and it's not a double, I usually just use that for bleachables.
And there is no way I would have my husband do it...because I would probably be wearing mud...

To brilliant Platypus...we have wireless and even if we did have dialup, which we did, it was only 11$ a month. I've got about a total of 15 items in my refridgerator if that gives you any idea of what our situation is like!! >:[

If you cannot afford a washing machine (full size) see if Hoover still makes the "Twin Tub Spin Washer." You put the clothes in one side of the washer and it washes. Then u put them in the other side and spin the soap out. Then back into the first tub to rinse. Then back in the other tub to spin out. But you stand the whole time, or even sit on a high chair so it is better for your back. They cost about half or what a regular washer costs, and you might find one used in good condition because most people only use them in a small apartment etc or until they get a bigger less labor intensive machine.

First...join your local freecycle group. You might be able to find yourself a washboard and/or a wringer to help you out. Another thing to look for on freecycle is a wash tub or one of those sinks on wheels that's high enough to keep you from hurting your back.
Maybe you have a friend or neighbor nearby that will let you use their washer and dryer in exchange for odd jobs in their home??? Maybe you could do once a week cleaning in their home in exchange for using thier appliances? I don't mean anything too strenuous (like deep cleaning) with your back and knees the way they are but maybe just some help around their house?
I hope you find a less painful and easier solution. :-)

Have your man do it. His stuff is probably dirtier anyway!! LOL Ok, Don't hold your breath.
I had to do this for a short time too. I don't think there's another way unless you use the kitchen sink. If you have 2 sides like I do, you could wash in one side and rinse in the other...

Check in your local paper maybe you can find a free washing machine. You don't need much for a hook up and get an electric dryer while your at it. Sometime people throw away perfectly good washing machines and driers..

What about rental center, they run specials for washer and dyers sometimes for about $15 a week, that with delivery and no credit check.

If you have okay credit, go down to your local Home Depot and apply for a credit card to see if you can get a new washer. THey have a plan right now spend $299 or more no payments for 6 mo.

It may sound silly but, use the tub, but use your feet. Hey it works for smashing grapes! This may at least save your back.
Also it should simulate the agitation you get from a washer.
Hope this helps. ;)
