He shoulda just left those animals alone. If you want to show nature, do it from a respectable distance. Here this guy is wrestling crocodiles and messing with snakes and spiders that are poisonous.
There was a Bear Lover who got killed less than a year ago. I can't believe steve didn't see this coming.
To answer your question, a Ray's barb can be up to 10 inches long - like a dirty dagger. Steve's death was a freak accident but basically the rray got lucky and hit him in the heart with it. Animals strangely enough are smart enough to know where to hit humans to kill them.

The answer is in the title manta ray. Rays don't have a barb whereas stingrays do! Manta rays also feed on tiny creatures called plankton, so are filter feeders! So harmless! Although the giant mantas have the reminants of a barbs, its not exposed, its how you tell the difference between giants and reef mantas. Steve Irwin was unlucky and was stung through the heart by a heavily pregnant female Bull stingray! If he was stung anywhere else he would have lived, but the blood lost from the heart was what killed him!

RE:
How exactly does a Manta Ray Kill you?
That idiot Steve Irwin - the australian nature lover who fed an aliigator while holding his 2 month old infant - has finally been killed by Nature.
A Manta Ray whipped him with its tail while he was swimming -scuba diving near a coral reef.
How exactly does a manta ray kill you? Does it...

You're the idiot. Manta rays are rather big and don't whip around anything very fast. They're fun to ride too.
But, sting rays, um gee, what's the word I am looking for...oh yeah "sting", there it was all along. Guess that is why they're called sting rays, huh?
There is a body suit that could protect you. It is called chain mail like the shark suit. Neoprene doesn't inhibit pointy spikes or barbs from penetrating it very well.
Just a quick question for you. Just what controls your heart rate and resipiration seeing as you apparently have no brain?
And, no I really was not an avid Steve Irwin fan nor did I watch his show. But, I know enough about him to realise, he may have done some "dangerous" things but he was not an idiot.

In the first place there is a difference between a "Manta Ray" and a "Sting Ray". If you can read the english language, you should read the story, which will tell you all about it. You do not have sufficient expertise in human nature to infer that anyone is an idiot. I doubt very much whether or not you know the real definition.
That man died doing what he loved to do. He was a man of action, which you probably could never even comprehend, let alone become one.
His life is to be admired, not criticized by you.

Rays belong to Class :Chondrichthyes Subclass :Elasmobranchii Order :Myliobatiformes Suborder :Myliobatoidei Though Manta & sting ray belong to the same suborder; Sting rays are often considered a little bit dangerous because of stinger coupled with venom glands And Manta rays dont have stinger & hence are harmless, feeding on Fish larvae, zooplanktons & phytoplanktons(microscopic flora[plants] & fauna[animals]) alike. You can go scuba diving with a sting ray, though being curious by virtue of nature, even a brush by their stinger will cause a certain amount of trauma. And in case of Legendary Steve Irwin Death. Sting ray city @ Grand cayman is well known for diving with sharks & sting rays. Hope you have got the answer

His problem was a physical one - the sting ray's tail's sharp point made a hole in his heart and he bled out.
TV people who are dedicated to showing how they can handle dangerous creature can't wear body suits or shark suits. I don't think a regular suit of foam rubber would have helped anyway.
