The song is called 'Denis' and it sounds like 'de-nee' because it is sung about a french man called 'Denis' and 'de nee' is the correct french pronunciation. The single comes from Blondie's second album and is a cover of Randy and the Rainbows hit of 1963.
This song was indeed called 'Denise' but because the cover was song by Debbie Harry there was a need to direct it to a man, presumably to avoid lesbian connotations.
The french link in the song is later emphasised when some of the verses are sung in french: "Denis, Denis, avec vos yeux si bleux." (with your eyes so blue.)
The song is perhaps more notable for it's unabashed needless key change before the verses sung in french which is often ridiculed.
