Originally it had to do with the value of the metal in the coin. The nickel had a lot of nickel in it but the dime had a large part of silver in it. therefore the dime was worth twice as much but was smaller.
Those were the good old days. Today nothing computes.

5 cents worth of nickel goes into making a nickel it equals that size..it took more nickel to mint a nickel than silver to mint a dime. Dimes are no longer silver, but they kept the size..

originally the nickel was made from 5 cents worth of nickel and the dime was made from 10 cents worth of silver. Silver was worth more than nickel. 5 cents worth of nickel would have been too small.

copper, a penny is made from copper! yet there are some older more effective rarer pennies that are made from aluminum! And 5 cents isn't made from nickel. and there is not any one of those metallic as "dime."
