They all look alike sitt'n out there in the vacant field. Sometimes there are 20-30 machines of the same type on the job and they don't have driver's licenses like our cars do. So, in order to find their machine quickly, they "borrow" one of their children's stuffed animals to hang so they can easily find it after their break. It also helps remind them of their family and act as a good luck charm.

Somewhat famously, a rigger called Jerry Tinsdale fell from the scaffolding surrounding the Pontiac Building during its construction in 1956. By a bizarre twist of fate, a semi truck carrying a cargo of soft toys crashed into the Wachovia Bank across the street a few moments before, spreading its cargo into the street. The truck driver was unharmed, and, miraculously, Mr.Tinsdale also escape unharmed, though he fell four stories, because he landed on a "cushion of teddy bears".

March 19th is annually observed by many construction workers as "Tinsdale Teddy Day", and many still tie a bear to their truck in honor of this.
