I would recommend using the Ubuntu linux distribution. It's the most "newbie friendly" and should be able to set up everything on your computer out of the box.
If you do go with Linux, no matter what distribution you pick, you'll probably want to set up a Samba server on the PC such that you can access your files from other computers (specifically, Windows ones). Otherwise setting them up to be accessible under Apache (so you can get them through a browser) would work as well.

Easier way to be to remove the hard drive and place it as a second drive in your current computer. Would be able to use the whole drive for storage and not have to install linux or anything else. Also much faster than trying to access the drive on another computer or a network.

i would not reccomend using Linux. Not very user friendly if you are going to use it for MP3's
if you really want it, then go to http://distrowatch.com/ and download a version.
if you want to use it for MP3s' just take the hard drive out and install it into which ever computer you are using now...then you will have fresh drive for mp3s only...Linux is always interesting to try out, but it is not user friendly at all...if you are used to windows and all its features, linux will be very frustrating for you...just FYI

Download Fedora Core or your distro of choice. Burn the images onto CDs. Put Disc 1 in the machine and it may boot right up. If not, you may have to muck around in BIOS for a bit.
FC5 is a very nice operating system. I like it almost as much as Mac OS X.
