Even if they are legit (and some are and some aren't), as an employer I would NEVER employ someone with a qualification from an online university. So if you think online universities are likely to be a great career move then think again - I would guess that most employers will distrust any qualification handed down by such an establishment, no matter how respectable because there are so many others that just hand out degrees when you send your $100 or whatever the going rate is.

as the internet becomes ever more ingrained in our lives, online universities are gaining a more legitimate reputation. people are realizing that things don't have to be done the traditional way anymore, and that's good.
but the internet is also a breeding ground for scams, and online universities are a biggie. some are legitimate, some are not. University of Phoenix is a nationwide, accredited university with a great reputation. most of the ones you see advertized are NOT. check the university closely. first off, is it accredited? if it's not, don't go near them. their diplomas aren't worth the paper they're printed on. check the course work and grading system, are the requirements what you'd expect from a university? look around and try to find reviews/critiques. these things will tell you if you're dealing with someone trustworthy or not.
finally, go with your gut. if something doesn't feel right, back away.
remember as well, that most regular universities now offer extensive internet courses. you might want to look into that as well.

If an online university is accredited with the US Department of Education, then it's legitimate. If it uses an alternative accreditation service, then it's most likely just a vehicle of profit, and any degree you get will be worthless except to the most clueless employer.

Also, GLH, I'd like to know your reasoning for not hiring someone with an online degree- many intelligent, industrious people actually work for a living. It's difficult to work 8 to 12 hours a day and then drive 45 minutes down to campus every night for an additional 2 hours of class before driving an hour home-- I could certainly understand why someone would choose to earn their degree from home, on the schedule of their choice. If the university is properly accredited, using standards identical to those of physical mortar-and-brick colleges, why would you deny them?

Univ of Phoenix is the standard bearer for online universities. They have some small brick and mortar facilities but their program can be 100% online. Well, occasionally there are group projects but if your groupmates are good with it online participation can be arranged for that too. The problem is they are very expensive compared to state universities. I dont know how well their credits transfer (based on difference of curriculum like ITT Tech, another private school) BUT I do know their degrees are well received and mean something to employers.

Another thing to check: Check your local state universities and community colleges for online classes. They may not support the full degree program like Phoenix but many very reputable colleges anduniversities have on-line class offerings.

And hey, if all this takes too long or is too expensive, but a degree too. Hell, for $100 its worth a shot. Good luck.

Some of them probably are.

However, a better question to ask is "Even if they are legit & people can get a good education from them -- will they be able to get good jobs?"

The answer to that question is NOPE
