Depends. I'd say about 20 grains to infinity--depending upon what size pile you're going for. Good luck!
PS- It can't be as small as 4 because they would not rest on top of one another. Maybe 5 would work, but I don't even think that an ant would call that a pile. That's why I say no fewer than 20. Any less would be insufficient to be called a pile by pretty much anyone.
