Need to elaborate more. What are its symptoms? What does it exactly do when you put it in drive? Any noises, jerks, vibrations? anything that you hear, see, or feel when you do this? 'Cause right now, this is too general. Give me more details and ill be able to pinpoint the problem for you. Being a ford and so old (dont know how its even still running) i say its trash, unless you want to keep it for some reason.

ok it could be a few things wrong. now if this is a sudden problem, and i mean yesterday it was fine and today you got nothing, it could be a linkage problem. theres a cable that connects the shifter inside the car to the transmission. thats an easy/cheap fix. if youve been feeling it slipping/bucking/revving the last few days/weeks, theres probably a leak and youre low on fluid. get it checked out and fixed asap if you havent alreasdy burned up the transmission. depending on where the leak is and if youve done any damage, it could cost you from $100 to a couple grand. if youve been hearing strange clicking noises when you take turns for the last few weeks/months that noise was your front wheel drive axles. if they break or strip youre not going anywhere. youll be looking at about $100-$150 per axle.

if its an automatic, look for a cheap recon box and torque converter, however, being as its 1988, ford, and an escort, trash would be the cheaper option

regulate the idle velocity. you may desire to be around 750-850 in park or independent. If its not, you could regulate it with the help of finding decrease than the hood on actual of the throttle physique there's a brass screw back it off a a million/4 turn or so until it idles the place it is going to likely be.
