Do I need a new starter or something or replace the entire tube light?

1/ Replace the starter. Small round object which has a bayonet fitting.

2/ If that doesn't work check the light switch. Sometimes the contacts wear and do not make a good connection. Also check the feeder wires are secure.

3/ If the switch is OK then remove the tube, clean the contacts and refit.

4/. If that fails then buy a new tube.

5/ If the problem persists then you may need a new choke but it is almost as cheap to buy a complete fitting.

It's probably the starter, but it could still be the tube or the entire fixture. Look at the ends of the tube: is one end or the other very dark or off color, to about an inch or two from the end? If it is take it to the hardware as a sample to match to the replacement. Get 2 this time and store one away. While the tube is out, pull the starter--a little round metal cylinder that twists and pulls. You may want to get a couple of those in case it's not the light tube. Put the old starter and the new tube in and see if the light works. If it does, you are done, if not put the old tube and a new starter in. If that works, you are done. Lastly, if it still doesn't work, put a new tube and new starter in. If it still doesn't work, save everything and call the electrician, because it's probably the fixture. Make sure there are no loose wires, and if it's a plug-in fixture, that the plug is in securely. It can be an expensive visit for an electrician, so batch all your repairs, and save portal to portal charges.
That should cover it all. B.

This is probably the starter, but if the tube looks dark at the ends, it may be the tube that needs replacing. The new starter must be the right rating for the tube that it needs to start, so make sure you get the right one.

Probably just needs a new tube and a new starter. Very rare for the actual light-unit to fail.

Sounds like a bad starter but its probably already ruined the bulb so replace both.

New tube, new starter, sometimes a lack of earth, try stroking the tube, glass only, do not stroke the ends.

take out the starter it should be at the side near one end to make sure you get the right size........go to B&Q or homebase or somewhere like that. find a match for it .that should fix it.
