A while ago I was head huted by a comany, when I asked them what package they were offering before I had decided to take time of and travel a 100 + miles to go for an interview they took great offense and told me most people are just **** a hoop about being offered the chance to work for them. Needles to say I did not go- what do you think does you jump when the whistle is blown?

You had every right to question them , so that you would know in advance what youd be putting yourself in for. If they had a problem with that, then there must have been doubts on their side, whether THEY could offer what YOU wanted

I think it was very unprofessional of them to not understand your position and explain some of the benefits of working for their company before expecting you to drop your life and see them for an interview.
I would probably have done the same thing in your position. You never know what you are getting into with a new job. If you were expected to travel without reimbursement for the interview you can bet they weren't going to take care of you very well after you were hired.

You definitely made the best decision there. If they are that convinced that people will want to work for them whatever then they probably would have treated you even worse when you got there. I mean the time you would expect them to be nicest to you is before you start so it could only get worse!

If they can't take the hard questions, you don't want to work for them
