An employer cannot terminate you while you are on short term disability. If they want to fire you, they have to wait until you return to work from your disability to fire you.

Like another poster said, I would check with your state's Employment Development department. I am also on short term disability. The company I currently work for (WORST in the world) charges so much monthly out-of-pocket to their employees for short-term disability insurance, most employees, myself included, can't afford to pay the monthly premium. So, I get zilch from my employer for short-term disability, but I DO get short term disability provided by the state.

My point is, your company shouldn't be charging your sick time to cover your disability. I've been on disability for six weeks. There's no way I had sick weeks of sick time, especially considering the fact that the company I work for gives us three paid sick days a YEAR.

When you call your states' Employment Development Department, be sure you ask about FMLA, (Family Leave Medical Act). I submitted FMLA paperwork to my employer before I went out on my disability, but there may also be some protection provided by FMLA even if you haven't submitted the paperwork.

Don't let your ex-employer get away with this. Make some calls and get information to see where you stand. I hope everything works out for you.
