The ocean isnt mans natural habitat, if your gonna go there u have to accept that you might meet creatures that can kill you.
If your referring to Steve Irwin, he took his life in his hands every time he picked up a poisnous snake or danced with a crocodile, he made his own choices.

Well, 99% of the time, nothing will happen. The smaller ones, especially around the cruise ships, are used to people swimming with them, & aren't usually startled.

The one that got Steve Erwin was BIG very wild & in the Great Barrier Reef, where there are not cruise ships every day & poeple swimming with tem, & in shallow water & from all counts, was startled by Steve.
Big rays don't like to stay in shallow water that much. It was just a bad set of circumstances that led to a tragic accident.

There has been like three recorded deaths ever from stingrays. But of course there is an element of risk when you swim in the sea with wild sea creatures. But statistically you are probably more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the sea.

It was in the open ocean, and the filming was for the purpose of entertainment and learning. Unfortunately, a knowledgeable and experienced animal person got too close, and a freak accident cost him his life. Supposedly, only 17 people have EVER died from stingray "attacks" - less than say Pitbulls!

They don't allow you to swim with stingrays.

That stingray was in the wild. Doing his own thing. They went looking for him and they got more than they bargained for.

Apparently people hitch a ride for the fun of it. Not a smart thing to do.

Since you can be killed i your own backyard by a bee, you can see risk is everywhere. Stingrays are not aggressive, they only defend themselves, it was a freak accident, it was probably startled and as it fled, caught Steve Irwin with it's barb. It's a risk you take anywhere, you can be killed by dolphins or anything else in the ocean.

I'm not trying to be nasty, but if you can figure out how to keep the potentially dangerous animals away from the pretty fishies then you could make a lot of money. I'm sure they do there best in picking the safer areas and I've heard of daily report for shark areas days/areas to avoid, but swimming in any area has risks.. fish and rays and sharks etc. don't read 'keep out' signs.

I've swam with sting rays a couple of times, one of the greatest experiences of my life. these sting rays are wild but they are well fed and use to human contact, though there is always the possibility of getting stung it is usually because of something someone does like steps on one or something like that. usually the sting isn't deadly as with steve irwin, the barb pierced his heart, and then his gut instinct was to pull it out which is what ultamitly what killed him. his chance of survival would have gone up a little bit if he haddn't pulled out the barb. but if I was in his shoes, I probably would have done the same thing.

as for sting ray city, on the boat out to the sandbar they do educate you on what you should do and what not to do and if you follow thier advice you for the most part should be safe.

This has not kept me from wanting to swim with sting rays, next time I get the oppertunity I am deffinatly going to take it. they are wonderful creatures.

Stingrays kill about 17 people a year so it is extremely rare to be killed by one.. By nature they are relatively docile creatures... It was just a terrible freak accident that took Irwin's life...

By contrast, mosquitos kill over a million people each year......
