most racing cars use nitrogen instead of air. there is supposed to be better traction and cooler running. But my opinion is that it is not needed in a stock car unless you are driving something like a Corvette etc.

Nitrogen offers two major benefits:

The first is that nitrogen does not change pressure with temperature to the same extent that air does. This allows more accurate monitoring of the tire pressure.

The second is nitrogen is not corrosive, as is oxygen (oxygen, like chlorine, is used to etch glass). It slows down the attack of oxygen on the inside of the tire (which is substantially higher than on the outside due to the fact that the gas inside the tire is under pressure.)

Gaseous nitrogen molecules are not, as was suggested earlier, smaller than oxygen molecules, so the leakage rationale is invallid.

Also, air pressure is air pressure, no matter what gas you are using, so nitrogen does not provide a cushier ride, nor does it improve fuel economy.

Nitrogen does not expand or contract like oxygen does when it is exposed to temperature changes. Race car teams use it because a difference of tire pressure means tenths of seconds for their lap times, as for us you would never know the difference.

Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they leak out of the tire less. Of course "normal" air is already about 80% nitrogen, so you are only replacing the 20 percent that is oxygen.

1. Improved fuel economy.
2. Tires last longer.
3. Tires run cooler.

nitrogen is dryer air and the pressure in the tires will not fluctuate as much when it gets hot

I seen that same suggestion in a newspaper on Sunday....$3 a tire to fill them up...helps with saving on gas mileage...but sounds crazy to me...of course my car is not worth $12 so I wouldn't spend that kind of money on the tires

Race cars use it also. I guess it doesn't run as hot and makes the tires go longer. Maybe better gas mileage.

It may be better in some aspects, but it won't help your MPG in any way that you'd notice the diff.
