I think that you may be referring to Yankees.

Yankees are called Yankees because when Great Britain was fighting the colonies in America it was an impossible concept for them that they were fighting British citizens; hence Yanks. People who were trying to 'yank' themselves out of the good graces and protection of King George.

Much later, during the time of the ugly American Civil War, Southerner's spoke of folks up north and when they did they used the term Yankees.

I have never seen a clear reference as to why Southerner's adopted that term.
