Depends on your skin tone. Some people just freckle. I am very pale and do tan but it takes ages and I have to use a very high factor sunscreen to stop me from burning, so its not worth it, i just fake it.

Like many have said, it depends on skin type. I am very fair skinned, but not red haired. I never tan, and have to use factor 50 and above to stop burning (I managed to get Factor 75 in Florida which is brilliant stuff!), which i can get on a cloudy day sometimes! I'm not bothered by getting a tan anymore, as I was born this colour and will die probably paler! I don't even fake it, and get sick of people telling me to try sunbeds, when they do exactly what the sun does, except much faster and much more dangerously

"Lovely golden tan=very damaged skin. Its amazing how people think a golden tan looks healthy. The only thing a tan does is signal that you have burnt your skin and it is trying to repair itself. " - I completely agree. Enjoy being a healthy white!

To the person above, I would recommend NEVER letting yourself burn for the sake of a tan. It really isn't worth the risk of skin cancer. I burnt on my shoulder in London a few years ago, and now I have hideous mishapen freckles, that I now have to keep covered up, to keep from burning again.

Embrace your paleness. It is the height of healthiness and is pure beauty! Don't try to change the colour you were born with. People with tans will be sorry when they get to 30 and look about 50!

girl when you find an answer please let me know. I'm a natural red head and its so hard for me to tan. But the sunless tanners do work. I use them not to give me a tan but to give me a healthy glow. Just a little color. If you are fair skinned and you've tried everything to tan you more than likely will never tan. But there is one thing that i haven't tried but i heard so many different results from. Go to GNC and get "Tan Pills" ask the receptionist there. There's one that is a dietary pill and one just for tanning. What it does is stick basically iodine in your body. But the only bad thing is the your pee and sh*it will always come out a different color. I haven't tried it because it seems kinda freaky and you will probably look orange after a while anyway. But try it. Just take every precaution though. I haven't heard any bad things about it but it doesn't hurt to try. Do some research. But that and sunless lotions are the only things i heard that help fair skinned people.

hey sam. i am pale skinned. a full on ginger with pure snow skin. just got back from canaries for two weeks and met a fantatsic women out there who was a sun care rep. she explained that you need a base tan for the first 2-3 days so keep high factor but not to high, never higher than 25 then move down to a 15-20 for the rest of the holiday but apply every 1-2 hours. i have come back golden. first tan ever in 33 years. if going abroad look for one of these reps they are all over the place. highly recomended

I have fair skin and never tan so I have started using these moisturisers with tanning in. Johnson's Holiday Sun is pretty good and very natural. Just apply everyday like your normal moisturiser and you will start to build colour. It is really good and easy to apply. There are a range of products available, so no need to lie in the sun anymore and it is much safer!

last summer, I was really pale and after 30 minutes in the sun, I already had a tan and tan lines, so yes it can happen. Use tanning oil

Some fair skinned people can tan, mostly ones with a Nordic background. Most pale people can't. Don't even try if you have freckles.

What about moisturising lotion with a bit of tanning agent in? ot exactly fake tan and it really works, gives you a slight tan so you don't have to go sunbathing looking completely white!

use a HIGH factor sun lotion and MOVE AROUND in the sun alot, for a few days, even using a sun lotion when sun bathing on sun beds. the sun lotion stops you from burning but you get a beautiful golden tan after a few good days of sun without the burn.
i know you said no fake but... st tropez. works wonders (self spray tan, best when its done prfessionally tho, and it lasts so long)
