I'm looking at a 1998 Audi A4, the guy selling it has a price of I think $7,400 for it, but it has 124,000 miles. From the answers given to that other question, I assume that this car will be good for a while. Am I right?? I currently have a Jeep with 135,000 on it, which had around 120k when I bought it, I didnt have a problem with this since Jeep has a solid reputation for high miles. The KBB $$ for Private Party is close to the price of the Audi....does this sound like an ok idea?? I just really dont want to get screwed...

It's not so much the age, miles or price... it's whether the owner has done the proper maintenance and not beaten the car up. One thing I look for is maintenance records. The better the records are, the more confidence I have in the car's quality. Does this car have records for things like timing belt replacement, brake repair, tire changes, oil changes and other maintenance? If so, it could be a good buy as a well-maintained car. If there are no records, you could be getting a real beater, regardless of how it looks.

keep the jeep the a4 is nothing more that a re-badged v w passat both have lower fnt ball joint problems and timing belt replacement is a nightmarish endeavor that requires the removal of almost all of front end components IE radiator and fans ac condenser grill etc till you are down to a crappy [German plastic] core support then you can start on timing belt replacement. i have no v w/audi customers that have kept their cars over170k all have been traded for cars of more reliable makes [mostly upscale lexus/acura models] the jeep when properly maintained will go 300k plus miles with rare exception will an audi or v w do this even with the best of maintenance.

I would pass on this deal. My neighbour has a 1999 Audi A4, and he has had nothing but trouble. He bought it 2 years ago, thinking that the car was a good deal. And now he has to take the car to the dealership every so often for repairs. The turbo and electronics on the A4 are the most troublesome.

That's a bit pricey if you ask me. I searched on Autotrader and there are a lot of '98 A4's with less miles or similar miles for a lot less.

Such as for $5,000 you can buy one with 122K miles.

The main concern for you would be does the car have an automatic trans? If it does I would pass. Also is it a Turbo? If so and the maintenance was not kept up you could have problems with the turbo also
