i just moved and have yet to get my own internet set up, hence the reason behind my absence as of late. but when possible i have been stealing my neighbors wireless internet, should I feel bad about this?

i mean technically his wireless internet signals are coming into MY apartment right? it would be like if he was cooking food and the smell was coming into my apartment, you wouldnt say i was stealing his scents.

The law does not differentiate between theft in a locked building or an unlocked one. Just because your neighbor is dumb enough to leave his door unlocked does not give you the right to go in and ransack his CD collection. The situation is exactly the same with an open network: the fact they did not impose a password does not allow you to steal his service. I see most of those above claim the process is legal. I would suggest none of them actually know any law, and I'd bet most also think it's okay to download songs without paying. The standards of morality in the digital age have fallen dramatically. To those people, I will pose a question: let's say you by a DSL connection, and fail to secure it. I log onto your network and download massive illegal movie files. So heavy is my traffic that your own use of the connection is impaired, and in fact is shut down by the provider for overuse. What is your recourse? Will you charge me? How, if you claim it's not illegal? A few days later, the FBI shows up at your house, seizes all your computers and network equipment, on search warrants related to the illegal downloads. Sure, eventually you might convince them it wasn't any of your computers that downloaded, once they have dissected the comps for a few months. Still think it's okay to share the airwaves for free?

Yes it is stealing and I think you already know that since you are asking the question. It's a service you are using and not paying for. Cooking smells don't help you connect to the internet!

Yes, it is. All this piracy business may seem like a quick buck, but in the end the businesses that provide the service will either go out of business or quality will decline. I stopped pirating music. I want the artists I like to continue to make music (even though most are richer than God, but then they are artists...). It is not good Karma to steal anything.

My old house I lived in a neighborhood and I got like six different wireless connections, just from neighbhors. Good speeds on them too.

Technically speaking, yes, you are stealing it but if he's ignorant enough to leave it open and not password protected and WEP encrypted, then that's his problem and you are most likely not the only one using it.
