Going back to school may be a way for you to re-enter enter the workforce without having to compete for a job. If you go vocational, the schools usually have an outplacement program that is successful.

Don’t discount your life skills either - being a housewife requires budgeting, administrative skills, etc.

Perhaps you can work in a day care (if you still like children after 14 years), or consider working as an adult day-care worker, assisted living worker or in-home care provider for the elderly.

You could also try for a part time or temp job to get some current job experience if you feel your computer skills are up to it.

Most retail stores, craft stores, etc. are pretty happy to hire back-to-workers and many of the skills you learned as a mother can transfer directly to retail.

Having said all that - it's not going to be easy. If you are looking to work in an office, you absolutely have to have a good personal image and at least some knowledge of Word, Excel and Power Point. If that’s the direction you want to go, buy the tutorials and start studying like crazy. MS Office is not very hard to learn if you apply yourself.

When you are confident enough in your computer skills to go out amongst 'em I suggest you register with several temp agencies. It's the best way to get some job experience and learn office protocols.

The primary temp agency I use does a really good job of providing me with people for short term needs. And, many of them are back to workers.

I am 46 years old and have raised my children now as well. I just wasn't comfortable applying for jobs because I felt like I had been living in a cave or something because there were so many changes in the work force since I was in it. With my age came the hot flashes and all the other goodies that come with it. A friend introduced me to a product which took less than a week to eliminate them! I was so excited, that I shared it with anyone and everyone I knew, and it has now built into a very lucrative home business. All the training was in place for me, I just needed to call into nightly conference calls to learn more. These are optional. I got phone calls from trainers and mentors who helped me turn this into a serious home business and am now earning more than I ever could out there in the work world, plus I get all the tax breaks that large companies do. This product has proved beneficial to absolutely everyone I have shared it with, so it's pretty exciting!

If you had a career before having the kids and you'd like to go back to it, that's where I'd begin.
I was home with my kids for 15 years. The last 3 years, I was taking college classes, because I hadn't finished school before having the kids. I'd been a flight attendant, and I wasn't interested in doing that kind of thing again. My first step was to be tested by the Women's Center Career Development Office at the local university to determine my strengths. If you can find something like that, I highly recommend it.
After graduating (magna *** laud, I'm happy to say!), I started working in a PR office part time at the local airport. Then I got into the stock brokerage business. 10 years later, I was a branch manager for a well-known firm.
Good luck to you! Your kids will be proud of you, and you'll love working again.

WOW you too? I was in the same spot as you! Being out of work for so long I didn't have the "experience" needed to get a job again. I have a diploma and a degree but that doesn't seem to matter anymore. So after being out of work for 16 years and was ready to go back to work, no one wanted to hire me because I had no experience!
So what did I do? I went to temp agencies to get different jobs that would be available out there until I had the experience. Unfortunately for me, being deaf made it that much harder. They say they don't discriminate but the minute they found out I had a hearing impairment they found a reason not to hire me. So I started researching online and came across a wonderful business at http://www.bedavis1.mywayout.net/ and fell in love with it. I love the products as I'm very skin sensitive and I love the vitamins and everything about the company plus we're also partnership with Nourish the Children! I can feed starving children all around the world! Something I've wanted to do for so long!
So now I work in the comfort of my own home and enjoy still being able to spend time with my children.
Check them all out!! There's a lot of good ones out there but make sure you do research because some are scams too. I know you hear the saying "if it sounds too good to be true...." but don't fall for that. Check with the BBB (better business bureau) and ck for legitimacy, complaints, ratings and praises etc. You just never know what you're looking for until you find it!
Good Luck on your endeavor!

This is for people that are serious and who don’t want to be misled as we have tried many things and have found a company that has been around for 21 Years and pays you to advertise for them. My wife and I just started and are doing well. It is not an MLM company and no selling, no deliveries or stocking product. My wife’s aunt has been working with this Company (Melaleuca) for a little over 3 years and home schools 3 kids and makes $9,000 a month. It is a 500 Inc company and the CEO is on the U.S. Chamber of commerce board. I can arrange a web cast with my wife’s aunt for you and you can decide by yourself and WE WILL help you be successful. It is an honest Win Win.
If you want to see a web cast (presentation) from your home let me know and I will arrange it as that truly is the way to see all about Melaleuca. Have you heard of it. We have just gotten started with my wife's aunts help as it is a team effort and it is fun. Just a quick F.Y.I. 8 out of 10 people that see the web cast join the company and 95% of the people that join re-order product each and every month. Let me know when you are ready and we will set up the web cast.

I have a terrible answer for you, but true. You need to take some time to get re-educated. My wife spent 8 years at home and found when she went to find a job she was no longer qualified to do much. She found some retail jobs, etc., but no career.

She took 3 years, went back to school and is teaching kindergarden.

14 years is a long time away from all the automation that is around the work place today.

I agree about the home based business - party plan idea. I work with lia sophia jewelry which is a home party plan with high quality fashion jewelry. I started doing this to stay home with my children and I make a better income than when I was working full time. There are no heavy/bulky items to carry, no inventory, no deliveries. Make a great commission, earn trips, rewards, and best of all free jewelry. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please check out my site and then contact me with any questions. I would love to talk to you more about it.

Well that depends...do you have a career in mind? Do you have a degree to fall back on? If you don't have a degree there are a lot of schools that cater to the adult learner. You could start a job in an entry level position and move up.

Good Luck, I am in school now and I have three kids...it's rough but possible to do it!

Blessed Be!

You can either go to your local branch of the D.O.L. (Dept. of Labor) or you can do it on-line, in your State's web-site. Just look up the D.O.L. in your State.
They have several good programs S.K.A.'s (Skills, Knowledge, Assessment) and tests that are free to job seekers, that help you decide what you enjoy doing and types of jobs in your area, wages, and free resume builders, the best feature is their job scouts, it will email you up to 3 different job catagories every day with current job offers, that are in your area.
You can also find it at: americasjobbank.com, then look in your State and town.
If you prefer, you can go to your local branch of the D.O.L. and speak to a counselor. They are very good, and very helpful, they will give you tons of information to help you start your new career; all of it is free, too!
Good Luck on your decision about your new career!!
